The OP probably needs to learn about dynamic range and the “volume wars” if they want to avoid this problem in the future.

Basically, modern digital recordings (and modern digital remasters of old analog recordings) tend to be much closer to the digital volume limit than recordings made/digitized several decades ago.  The reasons for this are interesting and partially capitalism-related, but I digress.

Increasing the volume of recordings that are already close to the volume limit will only distort them into a square-wavy mess (rife with displeasing non-harmonic intermodulation distortions) like this.

To bass-boost a loud modern recording without causing blatant degradation (if one can even make a Macklemore song further degraded than it already is), one must first decrease its volume to free up headroom for the increased bass amplitude.
